Awhile later, Sam and Noah ate their free meal. Neither one felt much like eating so they drank milkshakes and shared french fries. Noah accepted the thanks of several employees and spoke with a police officer who asked a few questions but didn’t seem to need much from them.

They walked back to the motel. Noah’s gaze darted around the dark road until they reached the motel office. Sam stayed by his side while he checked them out of their room. Sam suggested staying overnight, thinking that Noah might want a break, but he preferred to keep going.

“Okay, it’s seven, so we should be to L.A. by eleven,” Noah said. “We’ll spend the night someplace other than a Motel 6 and be up and ready to drive to Monterey. That’s where we’ll pick up the Pacific Coast Highway.”

“Onward ho, young man. The west awaits,” Sam said.

They joined the I-10 with the sun nearly down and the temperature dropping. Sam rested her hand on Noah’s leg and spent some more time studying the GPS. If all went well, she hoped to be checked into a nice hotel, drinking wine and snuggled up to Noah before midnight. She was already imagining being tied up again. She hoped the bed was sturdier and the room more soundproof. She trembled at the thought, and then glanced at Noah, wondering if he could guess what she was thinking about. She fiddled with a string on her sleeve, tugging it and wrapping her finger in it. She wiped her damp palms on her jeans.

The two of them talked about the incident at the restaurant and laughed about how it went, and the sheer luck that they walked in when they did. Sam couldn’t decide if it was good or bad luck that put them in that path.

“It’s a good thing the creep wasn’t armed,” she said.

Noah agreed with that.

“The woman was right. You were really fast. I didn’t know you used to play football.”

“In high school, but I think it was more raising my younger brothers that got me the speed.”

“That’s right,” Sam said. “You have two of them.”

“Chris and Raymond. After my mom passed, my dad worked a lot of hours, so I took care of them. They were just toddlers, so I spent a lot of time chasing them around and catching them before they fell. It’s amazing how fast they are.”

“I didn’t know your mom was gone.”

“Cancer.”

“How old were you?”

“Eleven.”

“And you were left in charge of two toddlers?”

“Dad had some problems dealing with her death. It was only a few years and then he straightened out, remarried. Beth is nice enough, and she jumped in so I had a pretty normal high school life.”

“That’s a lot of responsibility to put on an eleven year old.”

“It probably was,” Noah said.

Sam’s thoughts jumbled with wanting to ask more but wanting to be sensitive to his feelings. He solved the dilemma by changing the subject.

Another two hours passed quickly, filled with small talk before they passed Indio, California.
